In the Beginning

For those readers who actually know me (all 13 of you that visit this blog) you've probably noticed I've been on a disco kick this summer. I just can't get enough of the music and the culture that surrounded it. A scene like downtown NYC circa '78 just blows my mind. At the center of this scene was the Paradise Garage. The Garage has been credited for its influence on the development of the modern dance club as it is today. Unlike other clubs at the time, the Paradise Garage was focused on dancing rather than social interaction; and it was one of the first to put the DJ at the center of attention. Basically all the clubs we go to now are in some way trying to emulate what went on there. And failing miserably.

Ok. Enough of the Nancy Negative. Let's get onto some music.

By the way, HUGE disco points for naming the lead singer of The Zebras...

My friends don't recognize me.

So I've got a regular gig at a salon. I played the earliest I've ever played today. 11am. The owner - an amazing woman named Angie needed me a bit earlier. I showed up with a tall coffee in hand and proceeded to cast a mellow spell unpon those gettin' pretty. VANITYLAB is a great spot. Top shelf salon with spa. Great staff. Amazing space. Check it out.

The first track on today's post  might as well have been the theme song to todays set. Laidback, summer groove kinda stuff. Low Motion Disco is one of my current faves. Keep it Slow has been on repeat at the cabin for a while now.The second track? Well, it sorta speaks for itself in the context of this post.

Flying High

Belgium based Aeroplane describes themselves on their myspzzz page as "psyche guitars, pop keys, melancholic waves and catchy bass lines meets disco beats". You had me at "psyche" Mr. Fasano

I am soo feeling anything these guys put out lately. I came across Whispers in the Dark about a month ago and picked up the 12". Such a jam.

I'm looking forward to listening to some more of Kathy Diamond's work. She completely captured the "disco diva" sound on Whispers...a sound way too many vocalists try to hit, yet rarely do.

Aeroplane's got a slew of proper remixes too; all posted up on their myspzzz.

Just about every remix is spot on - but I figured I'd post a track from a band the entire blogosphere loves - MGMT. In my humble opinion this is the best remix of this track. The boys keep it clean and simple. Just the way I like it nowadays.

Horror in 3-D

So I'm watching Friday the 13th part III. It's the 3-D one. Super cheesey. And it's really lame when you don't have 3-D glasses. But it is the first instance of the iconic goalie mask. And, the title track is soo goddamn disco it hurts. Henry Manfredini composed the track. I need this 12". The world needs this 12".
Please let Zombie Zombie be involved in the next incarnation of Jason Vorhees. Their music is soo slasher ready. And I mean this as a compliment. Eerie disco beats that erupt into the macabre. Killer production too. They've got a string of dates on their Myspzzz page. All shows in Europe. Tear. I guess I'll just have to wait for Friday the 13th part 11.
